FitzRoy's Voyage of Hope

Re-discovering the story of humanity and science that changed the way we understand the world

In 1826, HMS Beagle set sail from Plymouth, England on the first of three voyages that would change the world forever.

The first voyage was to complete the charting of South America and would lead to the discovery of the Beagle Channel, in Tierra Del Fuego. Following a tragic suicide, a young 23 year old Captain, Robert FitzRoy took command of the Beagle to complete the mission. FitzRoy was arguably one of the greatest hydrographers of his time and would go to found the Meteorological Society (now the Met Office). He would also recruit a young Cambridge naturalist called Charles Darwin for the second voyage in 1831.

Onboard HMS Beagle there were seven survey boats including a small cutter called "The Hope" which was used for much of the  detailed surveying work.

Launching in 2025, we plan to re-discover her incredible story.
